I enjoyed Stephen King's "1922", mostly out of nostalgia for the Midwest (the story is set in Nebraska, I'm from Iowa.) I've not read all of King's work, but I think it's fair to say I've read most of it, and "1922" is very good, not the best, but very good. The King books I like best are the ones where I can relate directly to the main character or main characters. This book centers around two main characters who have jointly committed an act of murder, but the story goes beyond the murder itself. To me, the story also reflects harsh and lonely times in the Midwest just after the First World War, and the sometimes difficult choices that must be made in order to survive. Not for a minute do I condone murder; I am referring to difficult choices in a rural lifestyle in a small town, in a time where there is no internet, there are no smartphones, and no cable tv, with limited communication choices, period. A time of financial trouble, and strained marriages.For a novel class in high school, our teacher assigned us to read Fyodor Dostoyevsky's "Crime and Punishment." The theme of that book was that an individual committed an act of murder, and he considers himself free of the crime, as he has (in his mind) committed the perfect crime. In the end, he fails, not because of excellent law enforcement work, but his guilt overwhelms his conscience. The book "1922" brought back this theme to me, and King has done well in threading it through this story.
Wilfred (Wilf) James, always thought to be a decent man, is fed up with his wife and the Farrington Company. HIs wife. Arlene, wanting to sell her 100 acres, and Farrington Company wants to buy it! So, in Wilf’s mind, he’s making a practical decision. He kills his wife, but not until he enlists his young teenage son to help him.This is Wilfred’s confession (his Memoir, if you will). He is writing it just before he dies, some eight years after the murder of his wife and the death of his son.True to King’s genre and his natural writing ability, yet another well spun story. I’ve enjoyed each and every book i’ve had the pleasure of reading by King. This one is filled with just as much suspense and terror as all others by him. Kudos to King for yet another engaging tale of horror.
I wish I would have paid closer attention before buying.. I would have realized this is a short story included in Full Dark, No Stars.. something I already own in hardback. It'll be one ill re-read in a year or two, so no big loss having the Kindle version.
I have always been a avid reader of Stephen King and this one definitely didn't dissappoint! I even watched the Netflix movie based on this book. Always remember that the things most important to you can become your downfall!!
This book is full of everything...so many emotions in these pages. It confirms the fact that one action can change a life for the better or the worse. Here's to hoping that we all choose the one that works in our favor and not our failure.
